What I’ll Be Watching This Spring
It’s been a whirlwind holiday – thus, I’m stealing Bayana’s topic and sharing with you what I’m excited to watch this spring. There are some similarities but also differences, we’re not the EXACT same 🙂
I have no idea how I’m going to get through all of this television, but what an exciting problem to have. As I was going through all the shows that are premiering this spring I was struck by how many shows that I’m really excited for are on the smaller networks as well as how many “genre” shows are premiering. My DVR will be getting quite the workout this spring!
Marvel’s Agent Carter (ABC) – January 6th
Marvel’s Agent Carter is coming back, which means we get more Jarvis #andpeggy (h/t Bayana). I’m very excited since last season was supposed to be a one-off special event. While Marvel TV does a much better job including women than the MCU, Peggy Carter is unique as the standalone hero, not only fighting Hydra but also fighting the blatant misogyny of the 1950s. This season is going to be based in Los Angeles and I’ve made the decision to not watch too much of the promotional material in order to be surprised. This is definitely one of the most anticipated shows for me this fall, so I’m excited and ready to feel ALL THE THINGS!
Making a Murderer (Netflix) – Out Now
I wasn’t really anticipating this Netflix series, but like most of Netflix original programming the word of mouth and buzz around the show. As a film student, I focused most of my studies on documentary film, being inspired and awe-struck by Errol Morris’ crime documentary A Thin Blue Line, which was instrumental in releasing a falsely convicted person from life in prison for a murder he did not commit. Making a Murderer follows in this tradition in which it focuses on Steve Avery a man who was falsely convicted of sexual assault only to be arrested for murder a few years later. My friends have been talking about the show non-stop and after it was released on Dec. 8th, Twitter was abuzz with feelings about the show. So I’m already planning a long weekend in which I hunker down and watch this documentary series.
Colony (USA) – January 14th
I have been excited for Colony since attending a panel with the cast and creators at San Diego Comic-Con last year. I remember being so upset afterwards when they announced the show wouldn’t be premiering until January, what was I supposed to do for the next six months! Well, the wait is almost up and I’m looking forward to this show that reunites Lost writer and star in this dystopian show about an occupied and militarized Los Angeles surrounded by a large wall. The military is run by an extraterrestrial force, after USA’s summer show, Mr. Robot I am super excited for this marriage of quality and genre.
Mercy Street (PBS) – January 17th
So this is PBS first American drama in over a decade, and it’s set during the Civil War, of course, I’m watching this! PBS excels at historical drama but they’ve shot for the stars with the cast and crew of this mini-series that will follow two nurses on opposite sides of the Civil War. Produced by Ridley Scott with amazing writers, directors and actors signed on, I’m quite excited to see what comes out of this show that was inspired by real letters and accounts of doctors during this time. Though I gave up on Downton Abbey a few seasons ago, but I’m excited to get back to a great historical drama from my favorite channel of all time.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC) – March 8th
This past season of Agents of SHIELD was a nonstop whirlwind of twists, mysteries, and amazing story! So, obviously, I’m super excited for the show to return, even if I do have to wait until March. The writing was so good and though I was in a constant state of turmoil about my feelings for Ward, the mid-season finale was the type of cliffhanger that makes you want to spend all of your time finding the TARDIS so I don’t have to wait any longer to find out what is going to happen.
Orphan Black (BBC America) – April
It feels like it’s been so long since the end of Orphan Black season 3 and the fact that the show is only available on Amazon Prime is a bit of a bummer, however, I’m very excited to get back to the sestras, especially with the – SPOILER – reveal of the new younger Leda clone, Charlotte, and Rachel’s mother Susan Duncan who is not dead but is the leader of the Neolutionists. So much happened and so much is bound to happen that I feel pretty confident that Sara and Kira’s snow filled reunion will be short-lived, and I’m excited to see what gets in the way!
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (The CW) – January 21st
To be completely honest, I’m excited about this show for two reasons: Arthur Darvill (Rory from Doctor Who) and Brandon Routh (Shaw from Chuck). Everything else about this show is cringe-worthy, notably, its relation to Arrow and The Flash. However, like I said, Arthur Darvill.
