Friends and RuPaul’s Drag Race
If you don’t know, RuPaul’s Drag Race is a reality competition show in the style of America’s Next Top Model or Project Runway, though it features drag queen competitors. The show is full of talent, humor, and wit and has long been a point of bonding between friends. Recently, I think the show has hit a new level of popularity, with @BlackGirlNerds even starting to live tweet the latest season of All-Stars with #DragYall. I’m in the middle of a midwest tour reconnecting with best friends and RuPaul’s Drag Race is such a cornerstone to our humor and references that I figured I would post about what makes this show so special.
Finding out that a person loves Drag Race is an instant endorsement of our potential friendship. The contestants of Drag Race are fierce and talented and though it is a competition it is very uplifting and positive. Each season is guaranteed to have reads and shade but also heartwarming stories of triumph and rising against odds. Seeing as this is a show that focuses on gay culture, every contestant has gone through their own set of trials. Beyond the obvious stories of coming out and finding acceptance, they’ve also highlighted financial difficulties, legal issues, and illness.
RuPaul recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Host of a Reality Show and talked about the importance of Drag Race for keeping up a sense of community. I have a constant text thread with some of my best friends where RuPaul’s Drag Race is a continual topic of conversation. Drag Race is a thing that we watch and there are even watch parties at local bars to keep the community connected and in constant conversation. As I’m currently visiting my close friends in Chicago we got into a discussion of our favorite queens in the history of RPDR so I’m including them and hopefully, you’ll spend a weekend on the couch with your best friends, bingeing all eight seasons and discover your top queens as well.
